Quote, job and invoice numbers

Every quote, job and invoice is numbered for you. How to set where numbering starts, for example to carry on from your old system.

Chippie numbers every quote, job and invoice for you, in order. Quotes read Quote #123, jobs Job #123 and invoices INV-123.

Setting where numbering starts

  1. Open Settings and go to the General tab.
  2. Under Default Values, set Quote Starting Number, Invoice Starting Number and Job Starting Number.

Changes save as you type. The next new quote, job or invoice takes that number, unless you already have one with a higher number: numbering always carries on from the highest number used, so a number is never given out twice.

This is how to carry on from your old system: if your last invoice there was 1042, set Invoice Starting Number to 1043.

Gaps and edits

  • Numbers can't be edited on a single quote, job or invoice.
  • A deleted document keeps its number, so the sequence shows a gap where it was.

Common questions#

Can I start my invoice numbers from where my old system finished?
Yes. In Settings, General, set Invoice Starting Number to your next number. Quotes and jobs have their own starting numbers.
Why didn't my numbers change to the starting number I entered?
You already have a document with a higher number. Numbering always carries on from the highest number used, so numbers never repeat.
Can I change the number on one invoice?
No. Numbers are given in order and can't be edited, so your sequence stays unbroken.
Why is there a gap in my numbers?
A deleted quote, job or invoice keeps its number, so the next one skips it.
