Questions tradies actually ask about invoicing
What has to be on an Australian tax invoice?
For a sale under $1,000: the words "tax invoice", your business name, your ABN, the date, a description of what you sold, and the GST amount (or a line saying the total includes GST). Over $1,000 you also need the buyer's name or ABN. This tool puts all of that on for you. The long version is in our guide to what to put on an invoice.
Do I have to put my address on an invoice?
No. The ATO requires your business name and ABN, not your address. Plenty of sole traders leave it off, especially working out of home, which is why the address field above is optional.
Do I add GST to my invoice?
Only if you are registered for GST, which becomes compulsory once your turnover hits $75,000 a year. If you are not registered you cannot charge it, and your document is an invoice rather than a tax invoice. If you need to work a GST amount out on its own, the GST calculator does that, and the GST guide covers when you have to register.
What is the difference between a quote and an invoice?
A quote is a price for work you have not done yet, and it creates no debt. An invoice asks for payment for work already finished. Send the quote first and invoice once the job is done. There is a free quote generator here too, and it works the same way as this one.
How do I write an invoice if I have never done one?
Type what happened into the assistant at the top, the way you would tell your partner over dinner. It fills the invoice in and you correct anything it got wrong. The preview beside it is the actual document you will download, not a mock-up.
Is it really free?
Yes. No account, no email address, no watermark, no limit on how many you make. Nothing you type is stored: the PDF is built when you hit download and it is gone from our side straight after, logo and all.
