Quote your prices excluding GST and this adds it on top, so the customer sees the total they will actually pay. Not registered? Say so and the quote is produced with no GST line, which is the correct document for you.

Questions tradies actually ask about quoting

What should a tradie's quote include?

Your business name and ABN, the customer's name, the date, an itemised breakdown of the work with a price against each line, whether GST is included, the total, and how long the price stands for. The validity date is the one most people leave off, and it is the one that protects you when timber goes up between quoting and starting.

What is the difference between a quote and an estimate?

A quote is a fixed price you are committing to. An estimate is your best guess and can move. If you call it a quote and the customer accepts, you are generally held to that number, so quote only what you have actually priced and use an estimate for the rest.

Do I charge GST on a quote?

Only if you are registered, which becomes compulsory once your turnover hits $75,000 a year. Quote excluding GST and let the document add it, so the customer sees the real total rather than a surprise later. The GST calculator works a single amount out on its own, and the GST guide covers when you have to register.

How long should a quote be valid for?

Thirty days is the usual default in the trades. Make it shorter when material prices are moving or the job hangs on a subbie's availability. Either way put the date on the document, which is what the "valid until" field above is for.

What happens after they say yes?

The quote becomes the job, and when the work is done you invoice for the agreed amount. You can do that side with the free invoice generator, which works exactly like this page.
