What Revenue wants on a VAT invoice, and where it goes#
Revenue sets out what a VAT invoice has to show. Each item has its place on the template:
| Where it goes on the template | |
|---|---|
| Date of issue and a unique sequential number | The invoice number and issued boxes at the top. Number your invoices in order and never reuse one. |
| Your full name, address and VAT number | Your business details at the top, with a box marked VAT No |
| Your customer's full name and address | The bill to box |
| What you supplied, and how much | A line each, with its quantity |
| The unit price before VAT | The rate column, entered without VAT |
| The VAT by rate, and the total VAT | The VAT line under the subtotal, at the rate printed beside it |
| The date the work was done | The notes, when it differs from the invoice date |
| Any discount | A line of its own, as a minus amount |
From Revenue's page on what a VAT invoice must show.
Which template to pick#
| When it is the one | |
|---|---|
| VAT at 23% | Registered for VAT, on work at the standard rate |
| VAT at 13.5% | Registered, on certain building services, repair, and cleaning and maintenance work |
| No VAT | Not registered. The invoice says so, so your customer knows why there is no VAT |
Whether your work sits at 13.5% is a question for Revenue's rate list or your accountant. For services, registration is required from €42,500 turnover a year.
Supplying goods as well as labour? If the goods cost more than two thirds of the price, the goods' rate applies to the whole job. Revenue calls it the two thirds rule; VAT on an Irish invoice has it in full, with the exceptions.
