A bathroom renovation quote in euro in the Chippie app, with site photos from strip-out to the finished bathroom

Key takeaways

  1. Strip-out, blockwork, roofing and fit-out quoted as separate lines, with VAT at your rate.
  2. Each stage is its own job, so each stage payment is its own invoice, ready when that stage finishes.
  3. Extras go on the stage's job as new lines with a photo, so the stage payment includes them.
  4. The customer keeps every stage's quote, extras, invoice and photos in one history, from the survey to handover.

How a building job runs in Chippie#

A bathroom renovation in Cork: priced, built, invoiced and paid. An extension runs the same way, each stage its own job and its own stage payment.

  1. Measure and quote

Build the quote on site, itemised line by line, with VAT worked out and a photo of the room as it is.

  2. Customer signs off

Emma accepts from the email. The quote becomes the job carrying its invoice, and nothing is typed again.

  3. Handle the extras

A heated towel rail she adds halfway goes on the job as a new line, with photos of each stage as the work goes in.

  4. Invoice at completion

Complete the job and its invoice is ready, extras included. On an extension, each stage's job is its own stage payment.

  5. Hand over

Paid, and the customer carries every job, invoice and photo, from the first quote to the last stage payment.

What Chippie does for builders#

  • Quote the stages, not one number. A 4 metre rear extension as six stages: strip-out, foundations, blockwork, roof, first fix and second fix, each with its own labour and materials. A quote a homeowner can follow is one they can sign.
  • Stage payments as the work lands. Quote each stage as its own job at the same address. Complete a stage and its invoice is ready, instead of carrying the whole extension to the end before any money comes in.
  • Extras on the job they belong to. When the customer adds a rooflight or moves a wall, add the extra to that stage's job as new lines, with a photo. The stage payment bills it, so nothing is pieced together at handover.

Builders: your questions#

How do I invoice stage payments?
Quote each stage as its own job at the same address. When a stage finishes, complete its job and that stage's invoice is ready to send, so you are not carrying a whole extension to the end before you see money.
Does Chippie keep a record of extras?
Yes. Add the extra work to the job as new lines while it is open, with a photo, and the job's invoice bills it.
Does Chippie handle Irish VAT?
Yes. Set your country to Ireland and every quote and invoice is in euro, with your VAT number and VAT at 23%. Mostly on 13.5% work? Change the rate on the Tax tab in Settings. Not registered? Answer No to "Are you registered for VAT?" there, and no VAT line is shown.
Does Chippie work with Xero?
Yes. On Professional and Team, Chippie sends your customers, invoices and payments to Xero, and an invoice paid in Xero shows as paid in Chippie.
Does Chippie work with no signal?
Yes. Your week's visits and the jobs and quotes you have opened stay on the phone. With no signal you can open them, change prices and lines, add photos, get your customer's signature and send the quote. It all goes through when the phone is back in range.
