A deck and pergola quote in euro in the Chippie app, with the job's site photos attached

Key takeaways

  1. Timber, fixings, hardware and labour as separate lines, with VAT worked out in euro.
  2. The quote goes from site with your photos, and once accepted it becomes the job with your measurements on it.
  3. Builders who call back keep their history: last job's rates and site notes are on the customer.
  4. Photos of the frame before the boards go down stay on the job beside its invoice.

How a carpentry job runs in Chippie#

A deck and pergola in Cork: measured, quoted, built, invoiced and paid. A cut roof or a stairs for a builder goes the same way.

  1. Measure and itemise

Timber, fixings, hardware and labour as separate lines, with VAT at your rate.

  2. Send it from the site

Seán accepts from the email while the conversation is fresh, and the quote turns into a job carrying its invoice.

  3. Notes follow the job

Measurements and access details sit on the job, with photos of the subframe before the boards go down.

  4. Invoice when it is done

Complete the job and the invoice is ready from the same lines, with your bank details on it.

  5. The next call starts warm

Paid, and each customer keeps their history, which matters when the same builder brings you in again.

Carpenters get more repeat work than most trades, much of it from the same few builders. With last job's rates and notes on the customer, the second quote for a builder takes ten minutes instead of an hour.

What Chippie does for carpenters#

  • Itemise the timber, not just the job. Timber, fixings, hardware and labour as separate lines. A quote that shows its working is a quote the customer argues with less.
  • The builder who rings again. Each customer keeps every quote, job and invoice, so when a builder rings with the next roof or the next fit-out you already have last time's rates.
  • Roofs, stairs, kitchens, decks. Different work, same paperwork: quote on site, the accepted quote becomes a job, and the notes and photos follow it to the invoice.

What changes when the paperwork moves to the phone#

A deck quote, line by line#

A 4.8 by 3.6 metre softwood deck for a homeowner, from a carpenter registered for VAT at 13.5%. The figures are an example, not a price guide; your timber merchant and your day rate decide yours.

Registered for VAT, prices ex VAT
Treated subframe, posts, bearers and joists €1,150.00
Decking boards, 18 square metres €1,500.00
Fixings, joist hangers and deck screws €260.00
Labour, 5 days at €340.00 €1,700.00
Subtotal, ex VAT €4,610.00

Materials on their own lines let the customer see where the money goes, and let you re-price one line when the merchant's price moves before they accept.

Carpenters: your questions#

Can I itemise timber and fixings separately from labour?
Yes. Each is its own line with VAT worked out, so the customer sees what the materials cost and what your days cost.
Does Chippie keep a history for builders I work for?
Yes. Every quote, job and invoice sits on the customer, so when a builder rings again you have last time's rates and notes in front of you.
Who makes Chippie?
Caleb and Elliott, two of Chippie's founders, are qualified carpenters and run their own business on it in Newcastle, Australia.
Does Chippie handle Irish VAT?
Yes. Set your country to Ireland and every quote and invoice is in euro, with your VAT number and VAT at 23%. Mostly on 13.5% work? Change the rate on the Tax tab in Settings. Not registered? Answer No to "Are you registered for VAT?" there, and no VAT line is shown.
Does Chippie work with Xero?
Yes. On Professional and Team, Chippie sends your customers, invoices and payments to Xero, and an invoice paid in Xero shows as paid in Chippie.
Does Chippie work with no signal?
Yes. Your week's visits and the jobs and quotes you have opened stay on the phone. With no signal you can open them, change prices and lines, add photos, get your customer's signature and send the quote. It all goes through when the phone is back in range.
