Two jobs, worked out

Volume = length x width x depth, in metres. The order adds the allowance and rounds up to the next tenth of a cubic metre.

A raised garden bed

6 by 1.2 m, 300 mm deep
Length 6 m
Width 1.2 m
Depth 300 mm
Extra for settling and spillage 10 %
Exact volume, before the allowance 2.16 m³
Area 7.20 m²
To order 2.4 m³

Turf underlay

10 by 8 m lawn, 100 mm of underlay
Length 10 m
Width 8 m
Depth 100 mm
Extra for settling and spillage 10 %
Exact volume, before the allowance 8.00 m³
Area 80.00 m²
To order 8.8 m³

Then the turf itself: 84 m² for this lawn on the turf calculator.

Soil questions#

How do I work out how much soil I need?
Length times width times depth, in metres, gives cubic metres. A bed 6 m by 1.2 m filled 300 mm deep is 6 x 1.2 x 0.3 = 2.16 m³. Add about 10% for settling and spillage and round up: order 2.4 m³.
How deep should garden soil be?
Raised and new garden beds are commonly filled 200 to 300 mm deep, and turf underlay is usually about 100 mm. Deeper-rooted plants want more.
Do landscape yards sell soil by the cubic metre or the tonne?
Most Australian landscape yards sell soil by the cubic metre, so this calculator answers in cubic metres. If your yard sells by the tonne, ask them for the weight of a cubic metre of that blend: it changes with the mix and how wet it is.
Why order more than the exact volume?
Soil settles once it is watered in and some is lost in moving it. The allowance box adds 10% by default; raise it for loose blends or a bed you will top up later.
