AI tools for tradies fall into four buckets in 2026: free general assistants like ChatGPT and Claude for emails and admin wording, AI quoting apps like QuoteMatey, QuoteMe and Sammy AI, AI receptionists like sophiie.ai and Tradie Pal for missed calls, and AI features inside platforms like Tradify. Start with the free ones.
Every second ad in your feed is now some tool with "AI" stapled to the name, promising to run your trade business while you sleep. Some of what is out there is genuinely useful. Some of it is a thin wrapper around the same AI you can use for free. And none of it does the thing the ads imply. Here is the honest map, written for Australian tradies.
The four kinds of AI tool#
Most of the confusion clears up once you see that "AI for tradies" is really four different product categories wearing one label. There are general assistants, the ChatGPT and Claude type tools that write and rework text for free or nearly free. There are AI quoting apps, small tools that turn a photo or a spoken description into a quote document. There are AI receptionists, which answer your phone when you are on the tools. And there are AI features appearing inside the big job-management platforms you may already pay for. Each solves a different problem, each has a different price tag, and the order you should try them in is roughly the order above, cheapest first.
Free general assistants: the highest-value starting point#
The truth is that the free tools deliver most of the value. A general assistant like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini is genuinely good at the writing jobs tradies hate: turning your dot points into a professional quote cover email, wording a payment chase-up that is firm without torching the relationship, replying to a review, or translating a builder's spec into plain English for a client. That is real admin time back every week, for free, with no new subscription. Two cautions from experience. Check any number it gives you, because these tools can state wrong figures with total confidence, and never rely on one for tax or compliance answers without verifying against the ATO. And do not paste in client details you would not put in an ordinary email. Used for wording rather than facts, though, this is the best-value "AI tool for tradies" that exists, and it is where you start before spending a cent. Your quoting fundamentals still have to be right underneath the polished words.
AI quoting apps: fast documents, same old follow-through#
A newer crop of small apps promises to generate the quote itself, and three with genuine Australian relevance were live when we checked in July 2026. QuoteMatey turns a photo or a text description of a job into a generated quote in about a minute; it claims over 2,800 tradies use it, though that figure is the vendor's own, with no independent review presence we could find. QuoteMe is Australian-built and pitches a quote in one minute plus automatic follow-ups and invoicing, on a 7-day trial; again, the claims are the vendor's. Sammy AI, also aimed at Australian tradies, takes a spoken or typed job description and produces a quote or PDF proposal, and has a live App Store listing. The shared catch: these are single-feature tools. Generating a quote document is the first five minutes of a job's paperwork. The quote still has to be tracked, accepted, scheduled, invoiced and paid somewhere, and if the price in it is wrong because your charge-out rate is wrong, the AI just got you to the wrong number faster.
AI receptionists: a real problem, a real price tag#
This category attacks a problem no quoting or job-management tool touches: the calls you miss while you are up a ladder, some of which get lost to a competitor instead. Two Australian options were live at July 2026. Sophiie.ai answers your phone with an AI receptionist that can take job details and handle booking admin; expect pricing around $300 a month plus a setup fee in the $800 region, per the vendor and partner listings, sometimes discounted through promotions. Tradie Pal offers a similar AI phone answering service for tradies. We do not compete with these tools and have no barrow to push here: if missed calls are genuinely your biggest leak, this category is worth a hard look, and a month of one costs less than one lost job for most trades. Just do the maths on your actual missed-call volume first, because at several hundred dollars a month it is the most expensive item in this article.
AI inside the big platforms#
The established job-management players are adding AI features too, and the pattern is worth knowing before you buy anything separate: the AI lands on the top-priced tiers first. Tradify is the clear example. Its SmartRead feature scans supplier bills and its SmartWrite drafts copy, both live since 2024, and both sit only on its top Plus tier at $62 per user per month ex GST as at July 2026. If you are already on a platform, check what AI it has quietly added before buying a standalone wrapper that does the same thing. If you are shopping for a platform, treat AI features as a tiebreaker rather than the decision: the main ranking criteria are still pricing model, platform support and whether your crew will actually use it.
What none of these replace#
Run any of the tools above and one thing is still true: somewhere, there has to be a single system that knows every job, what was quoted, what was invoiced and what has been paid. The AI receptionist books a job into something. The AI quoting app produces a document that has to live somewhere and turn into an invoice. The assistant writes a chase-up email about an invoice some system has to know is overdue. When there is no system of record, the AI tools just generate paperwork faster than you can lose it, and the invoice that never got sent stays unsent no matter how nicely a chatbot would have worded it.
Where Chippie fits, and an honest note about AI#
Since we make software for tradies, here is our card on the table. Chippie is the layer in the paragraph above, the system of record: quoting, invoicing, client and job management, scheduling and card payments, in the browser on any phone. There is an assistant in it called Chip AI, on the free tier, and it is deliberately the least exciting kind of AI in this article. It reads your own jobs, clients, quotes and invoices and answers questions about them, it rewrites a description you have written, and it can draft a quote or an invoice. It never invents a price. The only amount it uses is one you have told it. Anything it writes into your business waits on a card you tap first. It does not answer your phone and it does not price your jobs, because we have not built either of those and we are not going to imply we have. Every AI tool in this article works better when its output lands in a system of record, including a competitor's. The free tier is 1 user and 20 jobs a month, free ongoing, and paid plans are $25 a month for 2 users or $45 for 4 (AUD, July 2026). If your nights currently disappear into paperwork after dinner, fix that with a system first and add AI on top, not the other way around. The free tier is here if you want that layer sorted.
A sane way to start#
Three steps, in order of value for money. First, spend a week using a free general assistant for every awkward bit of business writing you do, which costs nothing and pays back immediately. Second, only if missed calls are provably your biggest leak, trial an AI receptionist and measure it against a month of your real call volume. Third, make sure there is one system of record underneath it all, whether that is Chippie, one of the established platforms, or whatever you will genuinely keep using. Skip anything, including anything named in this article, that cannot explain in one sentence which of your actual problems it solves.
FAQ#
What AI tools do tradies actually use in 2026? Mostly the free general assistants, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, for writing quotes emails, chase-ups and review replies. Beyond that: AI quoting apps like QuoteMatey, QuoteMe and Sammy AI, AI receptionists like sophiie.ai and Tradie Pal, and AI features inside platforms like Tradify's SmartTools.
Is there an AI that writes quotes for tradies? Yes, several. QuoteMatey and QuoteMe generate quotes from a photo or description, and Sammy AI builds estimates from a spoken job description, all live for Australian users as at July 2026. They generate the document only; tracking, invoicing and payment still need a job-management system.
How much does an AI receptionist cost in Australia? Expect several hundred dollars a month. Sophiie.ai runs around $300 a month plus a setup fee near $800 per vendor and partner listings as at July 2026, sometimes discounted through promotions. Weigh that against the real value of the calls you currently miss.
Does Chippie have AI features? Yes, three, all on the free tier. Chip AI is an assistant that reads your own jobs, clients, quotes, invoices and calendar and answers questions about them, and can draft a quote or invoice for you to approve. There is a rewrite button on description fields. And you can upload an invoice as a PDF or a photo and have it read into a record. It never sets a price, and nothing it writes saves until you tap approve. Chippie does not do auto-priced quoting or phone answering.
Will AI replace tradies? No. AI writes text and processes information; it does not rewire a switchboard or fell a tree. What it can realistically do is take back a chunk of the admin hours around the trade work, which for most tradies is 5 to 10 hours a week once the paperwork is systemised.
Tool availability and prices above were checked in July 2026, and figures marked as vendor-reported have no independent corroboration we could find. This category moves fast, so verify on the vendors' own pages, and tell us if anything here has gone stale.
