A tree felling quote in pounds in the Chippie app, with site photos of the tree, the rigging and the stump

Key takeaways

  1. A line for each tree, then stump grinding, chipping, timber and access, so the customer sees what moves the price.
  2. The customer accepts from their email, and photos of the tree, the rigging and the stump stay on the job beside its invoice.
  3. Managed trees sit on their site with species, tag, DBH, height, condition, risk rating and the date of the next inspection.
  4. Inspections for a school or an estate run as recurring jobs, and each visit is added to every tree's history.

How a tree job runs in Chippie#

A fell over a house roof in Bristol: priced from the drive, felled, invoiced and paid. Crown reductions and managed sites run the same way.

  1. Walk the garden

Price the tree, then stump, chipping and access, on the phone as you go, with photos of the canopy.

  2. Send it from the drive

Hannah accepts from the email, and the quote becomes the job with nothing typed again.

  3. Do the work

Access and overhead lines are on the site for the crew. Photos of the rigging and the stump go on the job as you work.

  4. Invoice once it is clear

Complete the job and the invoice is ready, with VAT at 20% and your sort code and account number on it.

  5. Paid, and the next visit

On a managed site, condition and recommended works are saved on each tree, and a recurring inspection makes its next visit.

What Chippie does for tree surgeons#

  • A line for every tree. A sycamore over the garage and a row of leylandii on the boundary need different kit and different days. Give each its own line, then stump grinding, chipping, timber left or taken, and access. VAT is added and the quote goes from the drive.
  • Estates, schools and councils, every tree on record. Add the ready-made tree type once in Settings. Each managed tree then sits on its site with species, tag number, DBH, height, condition and risk rating. Every visit adds defects and recommended works, and the next inspection is a recurring job.
  • The crew knows the site before it arrives. Access, parking, overhead lines and the neighbour's number sit on the site, and the photos of the canopy go with the job to whoever climbs.

Tree surgeons: your questions#

What goes on a tree surgery quote?
A line per tree with the work on it, then stump grinding, chipping or removal of timber, access, and VAT if you are registered.
Can a one-person tree surgery business use it for free?
Yes. The free plan is one user and up to 20 jobs a month, with quotes, VAT invoices and scheduling. Professional adds a second user, unlimited jobs and the Xero sync.
Can I keep tree records for a school or an estate?
Yes. Add the ready-made tree type on the Assets tab in Settings. Each tree then sits on the customer's site with its species, tag, DBH, height, condition, risk rating and next inspection, and every visit is added to its history.
Who makes Chippie?
Caleb and Elliott, two of Chippie's founders, run a tree-felling business in Newcastle, Australia, and every feature goes through their own jobs first.
Does Chippie handle UK VAT?
Yes. With your country set to the United Kingdom, quotes and invoices are in pounds and carry your VAT number and VAT at 20%. Not registered? Answer No to "Are you registered for VAT?" on the Tax tab in Settings, and your documents show no VAT.
Does Chippie work with Making Tax Digital?
Yes, through Xero. On Professional and Team, Chippie sends your customers, invoices and payments to Xero, and an invoice paid in Xero shows as paid in Chippie. Xero is HMRC-recognised software for your Making Tax Digital VAT returns.
Does Chippie work with no signal?
Yes. Your week's visits and the jobs and quotes you have opened stay on the phone. With no signal you can open them, change prices and lines, add photos, get your customer's signature and send the quote. It all goes through when the phone is back in range.
