How the hours are worked out

Each day is the finish time minus the start time, less the unpaid break. A finish earlier than the start is a shift past midnight, counted through to the next morning. The week adds up the minutes, then divides by 60 for decimal hours, and pay is those hours times your rate.

A standard week

Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 15:30, half hour lunch
Monday 07:00, 15:30, 30 min: 8.00 hrs
Tuesday 07:00, 15:30, 30 min: 8.00 hrs
Wednesday 07:00, 15:30, 30 min: 8.00 hrs
Thursday 07:00, 15:30, 30 min: 8.00 hrs
Friday 07:00, 15:30, 30 min: 8.00 hrs
Saturday Not worked
Sunday Not worked
Hourly rate, optional $0.00
Total hours 40.00 hrs

07:00 to 15:30 is 8.5 hours. Less the 30 minute break, that is 8.00 hours a day.

A week with a Saturday morning

Weekdays 06:30 to 15:00, Saturday 07:00 to 12:00, $35 an hour
Monday 06:30, 15:00, 30 min: 8.00 hrs
Tuesday 06:30, 15:00, 30 min: 8.00 hrs
Wednesday 06:30, 15:00, 30 min: 8.00 hrs
Thursday 06:30, 15:00, 30 min: 8.00 hrs
Friday 06:30, 15:00, 30 min: 8.00 hrs
Saturday 07:00, 12:00, 0 min: 5.00 hrs
Sunday Not worked
Hourly rate, optional $35.00
Pay at your rate $1,575.00
Total hours 45.00 hrs

45 hours at the $35 typed in: 45 x 35 = $1,575.

A night shift

Monday to Thursday nights, 22:00 to 06:00
Monday 22:00, 06:00, 30 min: 7.50 hrs
Tuesday 22:00, 06:00, 30 min: 7.50 hrs
Wednesday 22:00, 06:00, 30 min: 7.50 hrs
Thursday 22:00, 06:00, 30 min: 7.50 hrs
Friday Not worked
Saturday Not worked
Sunday Not worked
Hourly rate, optional $0.00
Total hours 30.00 hrs

Each shift runs past midnight: 8 hours on the clock, 7.50 after the break.

Hours and timesheet questions#

How do I turn minutes into decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 of an hour, 30 is 0.5 and 45 is 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.
What is 7.75 hours in hours and minutes?
Keep the 7 whole hours and multiply the 0.75 by 60: 45 minutes. So 7.75 hours is 7 hours 45 minutes. 8.33 hours works the same way: 0.33 x 60 is about 20 minutes.
Do breaks count as hours worked?
The calculator takes off whatever you put in as an unpaid break. If a break is paid, leave that day's break at 0 and it stays in the hours.
How do I add up a shift that goes past midnight?
Put the start and finish in as they are. A finish earlier than the start is read as the next morning, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours, or 7.5 after a half hour break.
How is the pay worked out?
Total hours multiplied by the hourly rate you type in. 45 hours at $35 an hour is 45 x 35 = $1,575. Every hour is paid at that one rate, so work out any hours at a different rate on their own.
