Where this comes from
Each search reads NSW Fair Trading's public register of building contractor and tradesperson licences through the NSW Government's api.nsw service, at the moment you search, so what you see is the register on that day. The official search is on Service NSW.
What the status means
Current means the register lists the licence as in force on the day you checked. Expired and cancelled licences stay on the register, so a licence number on a quote can be real and still not be current.
When there is no match
Check the number for a typo and try the name on the licence. A licence issued in another state is not on the NSW register, and a contractor licence is often held in the name of a company rather than the person you spoke to.
Check the licence before you sign
Plumbing, electrical, gasfitting and air conditioning work needs a licence whatever the job costs, and most other home building work does above a modest value. Search the NSW Government licence check by name, licence number or ABN to see the licence class, its status and any conditions.

A company has to hold a licence in its own name. A director's personal licence does not let their company take the contract.
